Gay Mardi Gras

January 29th 2010

A big carnival is held in New Orleans every year, when its entire population enjoys the celebrations of Mardi gras, reflecting its high cultural traditions. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French and this tradition started some time ago when a fatted calf was slaughtered on the Tuesday before the beginning of the Lenten 40 day fast. This gave rise to the phrase “Fat Tuesday.” Mardi Gras is the ultimate climax day of the carnival that starts on January 6 and continues till the Easter. It is celebrated with aplomb and various traditional dress styles.

Gay Mardi gras is mostly in the lower French Quarter and people in extravagant costumes come from all over the world. Mardi Gras Krewes are the local clubs that hold elaborate parties and balls and sponsor other events during the carnival season. This is where the King, Queen and other Royalty are chosen for the year.

Gay Mardi gras started in the 1950s and the first Gay Mardi gras krewe was formed in 1958 and in 1962 the krewe of Yuga organized its first Ball at a private children’s school.

The Gay community soon began to reorganize and new Gay Mardi gras started to form and flourish. The carnival season started getting overwhelmed with dozens of Gay Mardi gras krewes and the peak came in the early 1980s when the events of the carnival became very popular with the local community with the result that the tickets to the carnival were quite difficult to obtain. There was a lot of improvement in the events of the carnival and Gay Mardi gras krewes were the center of attraction.

There has been a lot of growth of Gay Mardi gras community and it is continuing to grow. It is now celebrated throughout the world, especially in Australia where the Gays Mardi gras community is very active and enthusiastic.
