Maine Lesbian

About fight for lesbian rights in the state of Maine.

Maine is among the US states, which has lesbians side-by-side and residing close to each other. Back in 1997, the US Senate in Maine drafted a law that forbade same-sex couples to marry and did not recognize same-sex marriages conducted in other US states. In 2005, the State Legislature refused outright a proposal for outlawing Maine lesbian couples to marry through a constitutional amendment. The votes were 88-56 in the House and 19-15 in the Senate. The amendment sought to modify the state constitution.

Had the amendment been approved, then the state of Maine and political subdivisions would have granted marriage validity to no union except the one between a male and a female. Neither would the state and subdivisions confer legal status on relationships of unmarried couples that tried to emulate the design, qualities, significance and effect of marriage.

Covering lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders, the Maine Lesbian Gay Political Alliance is the oldest and largest political advocacy organization in Maine. It boasts of more than 1,000 members from all over Maine with a commitment to the ideal of equality. In its vision it strives to make Maine a place where diverse orientation and gender identity live in complete security for their families.
